Mr. Newman is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Pine Brook. Mr. Newman also participates directly in Pine Brook’s energy and financial services activities including deal sourcing, due diligence, negotiations and ongoing monitoring. Mr. Newman was with Warburg Pincus from 1984 to 2006, where he was most recently Vice Chairman and Senior Advisor and a senior member of Warburg Pincus’ management and investment operations. Throughout his career, he led or co-led Warburg Pincus’ energy, financial services, media, real estate and general investment practices and also served on Warburg Pincus’ Ventures Operating Committee, Executive Management Group, Investment Policy Committee and Economic Advisory Council. Some of the 47 companies in which Mr. Newman invested include: Newfield Exploration Company, Spinnaker Exploration Inc., Gryphon Exploration Company, The Marine Drilling Companies Inc., Encore Acquisition Partners, RenaissanceRe Holdings Ltd., Mellon Bank Corporation and Dime Bancorp, Inc. Mr. Newman has served on the boards of 15 public companies and as a director or board observer of over 15 private companies. He currently serves on the board of directors of Common Resources L.L.C., Harbor Point Re Ltd., Newfield Exploration Company, Phoenix Exploration Company L.P., SLM Corporation and Stonegate Production Company LLC. Prior to his time at Warburg Pincus, Mr. Newman spent 10 years in energy and financial services investment banking at Morgan Stanley & Co., Incorporated. Mr. Newman also served as a Senior Advisor to the Long Island Power Authority. Mr. Newman holds a B.A. in Economics (magna cum laude with Distinction) and an M.A. in Economics from Yale University. He was a Marshall Scholar at Cambridge University and holds a Ph.D. in Business Economics from Harvard University.
